Statement of Jeremy Bird on Boy Scouts’ Vote to End Ban on Gay Youth Members
CHICAGO – Jeremy Bird, partner with 270 Strategies, issued the following statement regarding Thursday’s historic vote by the 1,400 members of the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America to end a longstanding policy banning openly gay youth from becoming members of the organization:
“The decision by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America to allow openly gay youth to join their ranks was a major victory for both the organization – and for grassroots organizing.
“Not only did the 61% to 39% vote by Boy Scout leadership to end a membership ban that has persisted for more than 100 years finally bring this proud, community-centered organization into the 21st century – the action also showed just what can happen when dedicated organizers wage a grassroots campaign that combines people-to-people outreach, smart digital strategies, and a data-driven approach. This kind of organizing will clearly play a key role moving forward as the Boy Scouts consider additional measures to bring their membership and leadership policies in line with the values of the communities they serve.
“270 Strategies is proud to have worked with Zach Wahls, Brad Hankins, Ken Shulz, and the entire Scouts for Equality organizing team on this effort. We look forward to continuing to support them in the future.”
